This DVD is based on research from Columbia University Department of Physical Therapy (March, 2001) that the Tupler Technqiue abdominal exercises make the diastasis (separation of the outermost abdominal muscle) smaller. Since this outermost abdominal muscle is the support system for the back and the organs in front a smaller diastasis means less back problems and getting rid of the “mummy tummy.”

Diastasis Rehab Splint®
The splint is for all moms to wear after pregnancy …..no matter when they had their baby. The purpose of the splint is to help pull together the two halves of the outermost abdominal muscle (recti) which may have separated during pregnancy. When the muscles separate the connective tissue that joins them stretches sideways. The larger the separation the thinner this piece of connective tissue becomes. The recti muscle is the support system for your back and a support system for your organs. This separation weakens the support system for the back causing back problems and also weakens the support system for the organs causing the “mummy tummy.” The mummy tummy is actually your protruding organs that are not being effectively supported by this thin piece of connective tissue. That is why it is important to close this separation so the organs are being supported by your muscles and so you get a flat belly!
This separation does not automatically go back together after you give birth. That is why women show faster during their second pregnancy! To close this separation, it is also important to wear the splint all the time under your clothing and especially when wearing a front-loading baby carrier.
Wearing this splint makes the Tupler Technique® abdominal exercises more effective because it makes the starting position of the muscles closer together. Understand however, the splint is only the FIRST step in closing your diastasis. Wearing just the splint will not heal the connective tissue, the other three steps are taught in the Diastasis Rehab® DVD.
The splint must be worn continuously, like a cast for a broken limb.
CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR WEARING THE SPLINT:
Sometimes it is best not to wear a Diastasis Rehab Splint®. When you bring the two separated muscles together you will be putting the displaced abdominal organs back to their original position. This may cause pressure on the organs above (heart) and below (pelvic floor). So if you have any heart conditions do not wear the splint. You can however, still do the exercises and "hold" a splint when doing the seated and backlying exercises.
If you have any type of prolapses you can wear the splint if you do not feel pressure on your pelvic floor. If you do feel pressure, then just "hold" a splint when doing the seated or backlying exercises. If you are wearing the splint, make sure it is not too tight. Also make sure when you do the exercises that you do the following:
1. Count out loud. Holding your breath puts pressure on the pelvic floor and weak connective tissue
2. Engage both the abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor muscles when doing the seated and backlying exercises
3. Decrease the amount of repetitions of the contracting exercises from 100 to 25 or less.
Velcro does wear out. Please limit taking on and off the splint to no more than 3-4 times a day. Continuously pulling the closure apart will prevent the hook and loop from sticking. That is the nature of velcro, if you overuse it. Each time you pull the velcro closure apart, the tiny hooks take away the tiny loop threads. So adjust the splint instead of pulling the hook off the loop.
Hand wash and air dry.

GET THE RIGHT SIZE
You will need to take TWO measurements to get your correct size.
1. Upper Back - measure from one underarm to the other underarm. This is the MOST IMPORTANT measurement. You do not want the pad of the splint to be too big. If the pad reaches to the front of your body, it does not allow much room to pull the muscles together.
2. Circumference of body over your belly button - Measure in the evening when your belly is the largest. Your muscles should be relaxed when you measure. Waist size does not determine belly size.
If you do not have a measuring tape, measure with a piece of string and then measure the string with a ruler.
Please look at the chart above. It lists your back size and circumference size. If you find your circumference size to be larger than the range on the chart, then the arms of the splint need to be longer. For this reason we have developed Extenders. The Extenders will attach to the three arms, providing you with the length that you need. The Extenders are also ideal during pregnancy. It allows you to wear your same splint during the second and third trimester.
After a couple of weeks of doing the exercises your belly will become smaller and the elastic arms of your splint may become longer. You can then hem the arms to make them smaller.
